Uptime Is the Only Option: Deploying High-Availability Infrastructure for a New Casino

When you think of a casino, your mind probably goes to the flashing lights of slot machines, the chime of a jackpot, or the buzzing energy of the gaming floor. But behind that carefully curated excitement is an invisible, high-stakes engine: the enterprise network infrastructure.

In the gaming industry, network downtime isn't just an inconvenience—it is a massive regulatory and financial crisis. Casino IT environments demand absolute resilience. Legally mandated surveillance feeds cannot drop for a single second, gaming data must remain entirely locked down, and back-of-house operations have to run smoothly 24/7/365.

When tasked with building and configuring the server and switching environment for a brand-new casino project from scratch, the mission was clear: design a foundation that is secure, strictly compliant, and fundamentally incapable of taking a day off.


The Blueprint: Choosing the Right Foundation

Building a network for a casino is like building a fortress. You cannot rely on consumer-grade or mid-tier hardware when the stakes are this high.

For this deployment, the blueprint called for a robust, enterprise-grade hardware stack tailored for distinct operational and security roles.

Dell Servers & SAN

The Dell servers act as the brain of the operation, providing the raw computing power required to handle massive, data-heavy workloads.

To back this up, a dedicated Dell SAN was deployed to provide high-speed, centralized block storage, ensuring that transactional gaming data and operational databases have ultra-low latency access and maximum reliability.

Synology NAS

For file-level storage, backups, and long-term data archiving, a Synology NAS was integrated into the stack.

This provided a secure, scalable repository to store historical data and system backups without bogging down the high-speed primary production storage.

Aruba Switches

A powerful core is nothing without a fast, resilient nervous system.

Aruba’s enterprise switches were selected for their high throughput, robust security features, and exceptional network management tools, allowing us to build an agile network capable of managing heavy traffic loads.

Palo Alto Firewalls

To guard the perimeter and enforce strict security boundaries, Palo Alto Firewalls were deployed.

These next-generation firewalls act as the ultimate security gatekeeper, providing deep packet inspection, threat prevention, and granular control over what traffic is allowed to enter or cross between different zones of the casino infrastructure.

Eaton Battery Backups

To safeguard the entire environment against power fluctuations, blackouts, or brownouts, the server racks were equipped with Eaton UPS systems.

These enterprise battery backups ensure clean, regulated power delivery and buy the critical time needed for auxiliary generators to kick in without the servers or switches experiencing a single millisecond of downtime.

The Strategy: Segregation and Survivability

With the hardware selected, the implementation phase focused on two critical pillars:

  1. Network segmentation
  2. Link redundancy

Dividing the House: VLAN Configurations

In a casino, allowing different types of network traffic to mingle is a massive security risk and a regulatory violation.

To solve this, we implemented a strict Virtual Local Area Network, or VLAN, architecture. By segmenting the network at the switch level and filtering the traffic through the Palo Alto firewalls, we ensured that critical data streams were entirely isolated from one another.

Gaming Networks

Slot machines and player tracking systems were placed on their own ultra-secure VLANs, completely isolated from outside access.

Surveillance

High-definition security cameras require massive bandwidth and uninterrupted uptime.

Isolating this traffic ensured video feeds never lagged or dropped.

Back-of-House & POS

Operational management and point-of-sale systems for restaurants and bars operated on separate, isolated network segments.

Guest Wi-Fi

Public internet access was kept strictly on the perimeter, entirely cut off from internal casino systems.


Built for Resilience: Core-to-Distribution Link Redundancy

If a primary network link fails in a standard office, employees may lose internet for a few minutes.

If a link fails in a casino, the financial loss can rack up by the second.

To mitigate this risk, we engineered robust path redundancy into the fiber lines connecting the distribution switches back to the core infrastructure.

Instead of relying on a single backbone line for data to travel, every distribution switch was provisioned with multiple, redundant fiber paths.

If a primary fiber run is physically damaged or a link experiences a connection issue, the network is configured to automatically and instantly reroute traffic through the secondary backup path, maintaining continuous data flow without losing a single packet.
